Depending on the type of wood you use, you may end up with anywhere from a “small project” budget to a “major construction project” cost.

To give you an idea:

  • A DIY 10’x10’ ground deck costs slightly more than $500, and it will be made of treated lumber.
  • On the other hand, if you raise that deck, then do expect the price to double, or triple, depending on how high you want the deck to be.
  • If you’re thinking of luxury, for example, a 12’x12’ redwood deck built as part of the second floor, with stairs going down to the ground level, will have a hefty DIY price tag of about $7,000.

As you can see, it will be all about balancing how big you want the deck to be, versus material cost and the height of the deck.

Additional Costs

Now, so far, all we’ve been talking about is a bare deck. If you want to have more amenities, then you have to think of the following:

  • Gas Lines for Cooking – Be it a barbecue grill or a mini-kitchen area, you might have to spend up to $300 for gas line installation.
  • Audio – If you want built-in speakers in certain areas, you will have to spend about $250.
  • Covered Areas – installing covered areas, just in case the heat or sunlight may be too much, that might end up costing you about $300

Do take note that all these quotations are for DIY projects. Should you decide to approach a contractor, you should expect that your costs will, as mentioned before, double or even triple.

Finally, you should also factor into your costs the yearly maintenance, particularly if you have to re-stain the wood, reapply some chemicals to prevent wear and tear, or get rid of insects.
